The role is initially until the end of April with a view to a further 12 months after that. You must be based in the Edinburgh area. The role will involve capturing street furniture and highways data and logging this onto software on a tablet and making any adjustments to the data as you go. An unnderstanding of maps and map reading is essential but training will be given. Rediscovery Centre Limited, Ballymun, Dublin 11 The Rediscovery Centre The Rediscovery Centre is an award-winning social enterprise dedicated to providing community employment and training through innovative recovery, reuse, recycling and efficient disposal of waste and unwanted materials. The Centre aims to change the traditional view of waste and waste management systems by demonstrating best practice reuse and facilitating related research and education programmes. Central to our activities is the facilitation of research and education programmes and events. The Rediscovery Centre education programmes are linked to the SESE curriculum and are based on hands on enquiry and experiential learning. We provide workshops for Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Third Level institutions as well as libraries, youth and community groups. We are currently seeking enthusiastic and flexible individuals with a passion for environmental education to join our panel of Environmental Education part-time facilitators. The Role Reporting directly to the Education Programme Manager, the Environmental Education Facilitator role will relate primarily to deliver and facilitation of primary and second level environmental education workshops. The role will include but will not be limited to: • The delivery of primary schools workshops, both in Ballymun and in schools and libraries in the greater Dublin area (outreach) • The delivery of second level schools workshops, both in Ballymun and in schools and libraries in the greater Dublin area • Ensuring the professional delivery of all education programmes • Preparation of materials for workshops • Supervision and training of interns Terms and conditions Note: This summary is supplied for information only and does not constitute contractual terms. The role is seasonably variable due to demand and will involve flexible hours. Some work outside normal office hours will be required from time to time. Three, 3-year PhD scholarships are available in University College Dublin on an EPA-funded, multidisciplinary project (ReConnect) to harness the existing knowledge base and develop a validated methodology for prioritising selection of barriers on rivers for modification or removal to improve hydromorphology and connectivity in Irish freshwater systems.
All students will be involved in fieldwork mapping barriers on selected Irish rivers but each student will work on a different component of the project. All will benefit from interaction with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and with each other. Start date: April 1st 2016 (or as soon after that as possible) Scholarship: €22,550 in year 1 to €23,902 in year 3 (Note: annual registration fees are deducted from these figures) PhD Position 1 Location: UCD School of Biology & Environmental Science; Supervisor: Dr Mary Kelly-Quinn Research will focus on the effect of various types of barriers, singularly or in combination on aquatic ecology (fish, macrophytes and macroinvertebrates), and responses to their removal. Applicants should have completed a good honours Bachelor or Masters degree in Environmental Science, Zoology or related discipline and have studied freshwater ecology. Experience in identification of freshwater biota and in multivariate analyses would be an advantage. PhD Position 2 Location: UCD School of Geography and UCD School of Civil Engineering ; Joint Supervisors: Dr. Jonathan Turner and Prof. Michael Bruen The research will (I) characterise the hydromorphological (flow, sediment dynamics etc.) impacts of various types of barriers and associated attributes of channel boundaries (bed and bank form and composition) including (ii) an evaluation of existing tools to predict effects and (iii) the development of a decision support methodology to prioritise barriers for removal. Applicants should have completed a good honours Bachelor or Masters degree in either Geography, Science or Engineering. The preferred candidate will have some knowledge of either hydraulics, hydrology, or river morphology and will have good computational skills, including the ability to programme in a recognised high level computer language. PhD Position 3 Location: UCD School of Biology & Environmental Science; Supervisor: Dr Jens Carlsson The research will investigate the feasibility of using environmental €DNA (species specific qPCR and next generation sequencing based metabarcoding) to examine the catchment-wide impact of various types of barriers, singularly or in combination, on key fish and macroinvertebrate species. We are seeking to recruit a recent graduate to work alongside the existing UKMap team; helping to maintain the map databases, providing support to the management team and offering technical solutions where necessary. For the office-based position, candidates should have a reasonable level of GIS knowledge, in both practical terms and fundamentals.
