We are seeking to recruit 2 PhD students as part of the EPA funded IMPACT project. The successful students will form part of a multi-institute international research cluster to detect, monitor and risk assess contaminants of emerging concern (CEC), in particular pesticides, low level pharmaceuticals and personal care and cosmetic products (PCCPs). The PhD positions will commence on the 5th March 2018 and will be based at Dublin City University.
The IMPACT project team consists of Dr. Blánaid White (DCU), Prof. Fiona Regan (DCU), Dr. Leon Barron (KCL), Prof. Damia Barcelo (CSIC) and Dr. Jeremy Piggott (TCD). The IMPACT project will involve develop existing and innovative analytical techniques for detection of these contaminants in influent and effluent at representative sites based both in Ireland and internationally. Sample analysis will take place in DCU, in Kings College London and in the Catalan Institute for Water Research, utilising a suite of analytical GCMS and HPLCMS methods for the quantification of pesticides, low level pharmaceuticals and PCCPs in influent, effluent and receiving waters. Successful students can expect to undertake research visits to our international project partners and to carry out international benchmarking studies. The 2 PhD projects are stand alone with specific tasks and specialist expertise, but they are linked through a series of work packages that overlap. PhD project 1 will focus on development and application of GC based analytical techniques and passive sampling technologies for the determination of pesticides and using ecotoxicological assays as part of development of a risk assessment framework. PhD project 2 will focus on development and application of high resolution LCMS techniques for determination of a wide range of CECs and for sample screening. Candidates must have a minimum of an honours degree in an analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry or relevant chemistry-based subject and have on overall grade of 2.1 or higher. Students with experience in analytical or chemical methods and with a real interest in pursuing research are particularly encouraged to apply.
