Applications are invited for the above full-time post available on a fixed-term basis for 3 years from April 1st 2019 working on the Natural Environment Research Council funded Artificial Light Impacts on Coastal Ecosystems (ALICE) project in the School of Ocean Sciences (SOS) SOS is a leading centre of research in the marine sciences, ranking 2nd across the UK for predominantly Ocean Science submissions to the REF. The successful candidate will join the research group of Dr Thomas Davies in a multi-disciplinary community covering the broad spectrum of marine sciences located by the shores of the Menai Strait on the Isle of Anglesey. Anglesey’s 125 miles of stunning coastline and beaches are home to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and its position on the doorstep of the scenic Snowdonia mountain range provides the perfect environment for a variety of outdoor pursuits including scuba diving, sea kayaking, coasteering, coastal and hill walking and rock climbing. The ALICE project combines world leading expertise in ecological light pollution, larval biology, marine benthic ecology, tropical marine biology, and optical oceanography from across the UK’s premier marine science research centres to tackle fundamental gaps in our understanding of coastal ecosystem responses to Artificial Light At Night (ALAN). The post holder will work with Dr Davies, specially appointed research staff, and other SOS staff members to support the delivery of laboratory and field experiments that quantify the impacts of ALAN on the early life history of temperate marine invertebrates, and species interactions. They will be responsible for assisting the delivery of outputs for the ALICE project under the direct supervision of more senior staff by installing, maintaining and operating laboratory and field equipment; assisting with the collection of scientific data from laboratory and field experiments; maintaining the health and welfare of invertebrate adults and larvae kept in controlled environments; ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety regulations; and assisting with sourcing and purchasing items for delivering scientific objectives. Candidates should be educated to A level in biological or environmental sciences related subjects or possess equivalent experience. A degree in Marine Biology/Zoology, Aquaculture or related subject, or equivalent experience of working in these areas would be beneficial. The successful candidate will be experienced in the husbandry of marine invertebrate adults and larvae in controlled environments, maintaining marine invertebrate breeding programmes and installing, monitoring and/or maintaining seawater quality control systems. Our Environment Department is vital role in contributing to regulatory compliance, business growth and sustainability of our operations. The team play a critical role in the delivery of our environmental regulatory workload with the objective of meeting agreed targets. We are currently looking to enhance our existing Environment Team. Educated to degree level in scientific or environmental discipline, candidates are expected to have experience in marine survey and monitoring work to meet the requirements of our various regulators. As such, familiarity with the regulatory regimes affecting Scottish aquaculture would be beneficial. The successful candidates will divide their time between working in the field at our marine farms and our regional production offices. They will enjoy contributing and communicating as part of a team and will be practical, computer literate with excellent oral and written skills. Data analysis and reporting will be an integral part of this role and experience in the use of GIS would be advantageous. The posts will be based at our offices at South Shian, by Oban or Scalloway, Shetland but will require periods of survey work at our company sites across Argyll, Highland, Orkney and Shetland.
