As a civil service organisation with a clearly-defined commercial focus, the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) offers a unique career prospect that is hard to beat. With our geospatial data and information being relied on by the maritime industries, defence navies and a host of other marine activities such as resource exploration and environmental protection, our work impacts on thousands of lives. Crucially, we develop digital services, data solutions and software for desktop, web and mobile – meaning that we need to remain at the forefront of technical innovation. As such, we are committed to developing our workforce by introducing new talent to our ranks – and that’s where you come in. Combining studies with hands-on experience, you will have a designated mentor who will ensure you flourish as you join our agile teams to design software solutions. Learning the technicalities of C# or Java, Scrum and test automation, you will also be exposed to the most cutting-edge frameworks such as ASP .Net MVC, Xamarin, WPF and Hadoop. Attending tutor-led courses, you will work on a large software project that will help you develop and showcase the skills you are gaining, and you will be part of real-life projects including the support of applications and platforms. And by the end of the year, you will be a fully-skilled engineer – and ready to explore your future potential with us. To make the most of this unique role, we’ll expect you to build good relationships with others in the development community, so you’ll need good communication skills. With some experience of coding – be that as a hobby, in an academic capacity or in a commercial environment – you will also have a basic understanding of relational databases and .Net or Java and object orientated concepts. Our industry-leading products ensure safe navigation of the seas and support global trade potential. It’s hugely important work, resulting in a vibrant atmosphere in which innovation and creativity are celebrated. As such, this is the perfect way to launch a high-flying career, so if you’ve got the drive and vision to help us continue developing our exceptional products, then we’d love to hear from you.
