Applications are invited for GeoTenerife's Summer 2016 internship programme, run in conjunction with INVOLCAN, the Canary Island Volcanology Institute. We have vacancies for Volcano Monitoring, Science Communication and Environmental Studies.
Full details can be found on our website, www.geotenerife.com alongside video testimonials and updates from our 2014 and 2015 interns. The deadline for applications is Friday 25 March 2015, and no late entries will be accepted. Volcano monitoring internships are on offer in Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro. Successful applicants will undertake fieldwork related to diffuse volcanic degassing survey and lab work for chemical and isotopic analysis of the soil gas samples collected. Students will be trained to: i: use portable instrumentation to perform in-situ measurements of soil CO2 efflux ii: collect soil gas samples for chemical and isotopic analysis iii: apply statistical-graphical analysis of the collected data iv: evaluate the total diffuse CO2 emission from an active volcano using Gaussian simulations v: use lab instrumental such as micro-chromatography (microGC) and quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) to perform chemical analysis of the collected soil gas samples, and vi: use an IRMS to perform C isotopic analysis of the soil CO2. Science Communication and Outreach interns will work with Involcán on their weekly science and technology radio programme, PLANETA VIVO, which is broadcast weekly by RNE (the Spanish National Radio network, Radio Nacional Española). Suitable for science undergraduates with a good working knowledge of Spanish. Work to include research, interview technique, programme building and presenting. Environmental studies interns will perform fieldwork to evaluate CH4 emission rates from a closed landfill as well as SO2 emissions from Power Plants in Tenerife. Students will be trained to: i: use portable instrumentation to perform surface CH4 efflux measurements, ii: apply statistical-graphical analysis of the collected data, iii: collect landfill gas samples for chemical and isotopic analysis, iv: evaluate CH4 emissions using Gaussian simulations, v: use lab instrumental such as micro-chromatography (microGC) and quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) to perform chemical analysis of the collected soil gas samples, and vi: use portable optical remote instruments such as miniDOAS and COSPEC to evaluate SO2 emissions from Power Plants.
