Galway City MuseumGalway City Museum was originally founded in the 1970s and occupied Comerford House, an early 19th century house adjacent to the Spanish Arch. It closed in 2004 and was replaced by a new purpose-built museum on a site next-door and which opened in April 2007. The new Galway City Museum project was an initiative of Galway City Council to advance the cultural and heritage life of Galway City. In the last twelve years the team at the museum developed exhibitions that can be viewed on three floors – the ground floor Archaeology Galleries; the first floor History Galleries and the second floor Sea Science Galleries. A successful temporary exhibition programme is also mounted every year, and each quarter there is an interesting education and events programme that is designed to appeal to all ages and all interests. Galway City Council has already invested €6.8million in the construction of the existing museum and supports annual operational costs. Ambitious plans are now in place to increase and extend the museum site over the next number years. The City Museum has a current staff of seven full-time staff members and a number of volunteers. Galway City Museum are hiring a new Graduate Intern, funded by the Marine Institute to join this team. Duties of Intern The Graduate Intern appointed will be responsible, on a day to day basis, for the entire Sea Science floor. What this means is that the Intern will be based on the floor, providing a point of contact/source of information and communication /guide to visitors to the Sea Science Galleries. Part of the Intern's duties will also be to note any damage to exhibits, any repairs needed, any concerns regarding the exhibition and to bring them to the attention of the director or relevant staff members. The Intern will be required to give tours of the Galleries and to provide interpretive and explanatory information about each of the exhibits (training will be provided for all of this). The Intern will also be asked to assist with visitor evaluations of the Sea Science Galleries and exhibits. The Intern may also be requested to get involved in giving workshops, drafting additional educational material and presenting/ publishing material at conferences and on the Museum's digital/social media platforms. Qualifications Each candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed applications be: • A recent graduate (within 2 years) with an honours degree in science communications, media studies, marine science or a related field. • Proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Office, Outlook, PowerPoint etc). • Excellent communication and writing skills. • Demonstrated ability to use initiative. • The ability to be organised and work independently to deadlines. • Strong customer service skills. • Experience assisting with/coordinating events. Desirable Competencies • Experience in guiding/teaching/training/ working with young people. • Report writing skills. • Presentation skills. • An understanding of the design & print process. • Experience writing content for online or traditional media. Remuneration Remuneration is in accordance with the Marine Institute funded stipend of €25,000 per annum; pro-rated with time worked. Annual Leave Annual leave entitlement for is 22 working days per annum pro-rated to reflect time worked. Annual leave entitlements are exclusive of Public Holidays. All leave should be agreed and approved in advance with the line manager and in adherence to Galway City Council's Leave and related policies.
