Project Synopsis: This project will focus on developing key agricultural metrics of sustainability for grassland livestock and arable systems. This will be achieved by utilising historical data from previous and current AFBI and Rothamsted projects. Access to these extensive datasets will provide a unique opportunity to study physical, chemical and biological properties of grassland and arable soils in both Northern Ireland and England, and develop sustainability metrics that are robust under different environments and agricultural production systems. The developed metrics will then be used to evaluate the performance of different commercial production systems in the context of environmental, economic and societal sustainability. Mechanistic models such as Daycent will also be used to simulate nutrient losses for different scenarios when data are not available. The main aims of this research are to:
Please note that ‘for a PhD candidate to be eligible, they must be ordinarily resident in Northern Ireland for the full three year period before the first day of the first academic year of the course, i.e. normally 1 October (or would have been so resident had the candidate, the spouse or either parent not been employed temporarily outside NI’.
