The Forester & Geodata team sit within the Inventory Forecasting & Operational Support centre, an expert, customer focussed provider of forestry information, software and services. To support our Data as a Service (DaaS) provision, the Forester & Geodata team are looking to recruit a Spatial Data Manager to cover maternity leave. This is a one year fixed term appointment. Once we return to offices, the Forester & Geodata team will be based at Silvan House in Edinburgh moving to Forest Research’s Northern Research Station, Roslin by 2022.Job descriptionForester is an integrated, cloud hosted spatial platform for forest and land management that currently services 1600 users across the Forestry Commission and external customers. Sitting within the platform is Forester Geostore, a spatial data and metadata management solution which forms the foundation of our Data as a Service (DaaS) provision. In this role you will be working with the latest spatial technologies and you will take ownership of the day-to-day management of Forester Geostore and the corporate data and metadata it contains. You’ll have responsibility for the maintenance and update of around 400 datasets from a diversity of sources. You’ll work with vector datasets, raster products, aerial photography, satellite imagery and more. Forester Geostore is integral to the wider Forester Platform and services the team provide. Teamwork really is an essential part of this role. Working with our Software as a Service team you will ensure data updates are coordinated with any potential software impacts understood and mitigated. Working with the wider Forester Geostore team you’ll support new developments and enhance our DaaS offer. This role has a strong customer and delivery focus. As a trusted advisor you will support our customers in their use of the corporate spatial data holding and the Forester Geostore platform. Working with the Forester Platform team you will resolve data issues for our customers in a timely manner and act as a champion for Forester Geostore and the Forester Platform. Data and Metadata management • Take the lead in the day-to-day maintenance of Forester Geostore user interfaces and data services. This will include data management, publishing and updating web services and cataloguing metadata. • Take ownership of the timetabling and implementation of updates to corporate spatial data holdings. • Support customers in the management and publication of their own corporate spatial data. Customer engagement and support • Act as a trusted advisor to our customers supporting them in their use of corporate spatial data and the Forester Geostore platform. • Participate in the Forester Geostore service desk provision working with colleagues from across the Forester Platform to resolve issues raised by our users. • Proactively communicate with our users informing them of new data developments, updates and any technical issues. Open data • Working with colleagues from across the FC to manage and maintain our ArcGIS Online site and open data offer. This will include triaging queries from members of the public and ensuring they are resolved in a timely manner. Service development (projects) • Support the DaaS Manager and Forester Geostore project team in the implementation and roll out of new user functionality, data services and infrastructure improvements. Spatial data and mapping support • As required, coordinate with colleagues across the Forester and Geodata team and wider Forestry Commission to support spatial data capture, mapping and GIS analysis projects/programs. Collaborative working • Line manage a number of staff within the Forester and Geodata team. • Work with the wider Forester team to deliver a market-leading geospatial platform on schedule and to a level of quality agreed with our customers. ResponsibilitiesEssential Criteria • A relevant degree/diploma with significant experience in a spatial data/GIS role. • A good working knowledge and proven track record in using a wide range of Esri technologies including ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise. • Experience of spatial data management including both vector and raster data types. • Experience of working with large spatial datasets. • Experience of publishing and managing geospatial web services. • A working knowledge of Python or other scripting languages. • Strong interpersonal skills and experience of team working. • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft desktop packages.
