Job description
The post holder will be an experienced and knowledgeable environmental scientist who will be responsible to the Head of Salvage and Marine Operations (SALMO) for the marine environmental science aspects of the MoD’s Wreck Management Programme (WMP). The work encompasses the management of the environmental risks associated with the approximately 5000 post-1870 shipwrecks for which the MoD is responsible. This is a new post with scope for the job holder to develop their role and advance the field of ship wreck related environmental science. It requires a highly motivated scientist possessing proven task management, planning and organisational skills who will quickly establish themselves as the subject matter expert in this emerging cross disciplinary field. The post holder will provide expert input to the level 1 (Desk Based Assessment), level 2 (Survey) and level 3 (Intervention) aspects of the WMP. The post holder will be responsible for identifying areas where additional research is required then setting and overseeing the research contracts. The post holder will, when as subject matter expert they see a requirement, plan and participate in on-site work, potentially at remote locations worldwide for extended periods. The work requires contact with numerous public bodies, universities and other government departments as well as demanding the ability to address complex environmental questions and to prioritise high risk wrecks for remediation. As such sound judgement and a strong ability to balance competing priorities and manage specialist resources efficiently will be essential, as will communication and IT literacy skills. Positive interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively within a small team are critical to the post. The role will be key in developing the environmental utility of the WMP Geographic Information System (GIS) and the exploitation of this asset. In addition the post holder will provide subject matter expert advice to the marine environmental aspects of the wider SALMO work programme as required. Experience/knowledge of: • using geographical information systems (preferably ArcGIS), • using and deploying scientific equipment at sea, • invasive species and biohazards, • writing environmental safety cases, • writing reports and delivering presentations This post involves frequent travel within the UK and occasional overseas travel. The candidate must be willing and able to travel. The role is required to provide occasional urgent support to salvage operations; the post holder must be flexible. This role involves regular contact with the recreational diving community. It is desirable that the post holder has a basic diving qualification (though diving is not part of this role) to provide an understanding of the community. This post involves public engagement and presentations, the holder must be a confident public speaker. QualificationsMinimum of Masters Degree in marine environmental science, marine ecology, biology, eco-toxicology or a closely related environmental science.
